Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that the Kansas City Chiefs want running back Damien Williams to be "the full-time starter for the year" according to BJ Kissel of

"He's taken that challenge," Reid continued. "He wants to do this thing. He's earned the right to be that guy. And now it's a matter of production. Ya gotta go do it." Following Kareem Hunt's release ahead of Week 13 last season, the Chiefs initially gave the No. 1 job to Spencer Ware. But Williams quickly established himself as the best back on the team. Williams scored 10 touchdowns over the final six games, including the playoffs, averaging 17.5 touches per contest.

There had been speculation that veteran Carlos Hyde would take a chunk of Williams' workload this year after the Chiefs signed Hyde to a one-year, $2.8 million contract in March.  Hyde certainly has a more impressive draft pedigree (2014 second-round pick vs. undrafted free agent) and a more impressive track record in the NFL.  But Hyde has rarely been involved as a receiver out of the backfield-an ability Williams flashed with 24/210/3 receiving over Kansas City's final five games (playoffs included). Hyde also has an extensive injury history and had a lost 2018 as the Chiefs are his fourth team in the last 12 months.

Given Reid's historic preference for one main back in his offenses, it is apparent that Williams will be the guy unless he goes down with an injury or stops being effective.
