The 49ers have agreed to terms with Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin, 30, on a one-year contract, adding potential experience and depth to a young and unsettled position group, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.  This per a league source.

Benjamin (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) played for head coach Kyle Shanahan in 2014 when Shanahan was the Browns’ offensive coordinator. Benjamin was a teammate with 49ers offensive assistant Miles Austin with Cleveland in 2014. Austin works with the team’s wide receivers.

Benjamin also provides special-teams value. He ranks third among active players in yards per punt return (10.9), is tied for second in punt-return touchdowns (four) and is 12th in total punt returns (109). He’s also averaged 25.5 yards on 19 kickoff returns.

Last year, 49ers wide receiver Richie James averaged 8 yards per punt return and 20.5 yards on kickoff returns.
