The Patriots are adding more depth to their offense, Mark Daniels of Masslive reports.
According to a league source, the Patriots are signing running back James Robinson to a 2-year deal worth up to $8 million. The 24-year-old spent two productive seasons in Jacksonville before being traded to the New York Jets last season.
After the news broke, Robinson tweeted, “Let’s get it! Time to go to work!!! #Patriots”
By adding Robinson, this move likely means the end of Damien Harris’ time in New England. Harris is currently an unrestricted free agent and it’s unlikely the Patriots would bring him back after signing Robinson to this deal.
Robinson came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020. During his rookie season, he ran for a career-high 1,070 yards to go with seven touchdowns. Robinson also caught 49 passes for 344 yards that year. The running back ran for 767 yards to go with eight touchdowns in 2021. However, his season ended after 14 games after suffering a torn Achilles.
That injury clearly set Robinson back last season. He ran for 340 yards, scoring three touchdowns, in seven games with the Jaguars. Robinson was then traded to the Jets for a conditional sixth-round pick. He ran for 85 yards in four games with New York.
