49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Sunday that wide receiver Danny Gray has an SC joint sprain in his shoulder and the timeline for return is still unclear.

"We were worried it was a broken collarbone," Shanahan said. "It is still a pretty bad injury. ... It doesn't sound like he'll be ready at the beginning of the year."

Gray left Saturday's 21-20 preseason victory over the Broncos after injuring his right shoulder on the game's opening kickoff. 

Because of Gray's injury the 49ers are thin at receiver with both Gray and Ray Ray McCloud on the sidelines with injuries.
