NFL insider ‘would not be surprised’ if Bears fired Matt Eberflus after a bad loss Thursday

The Chicago Bears have never fired a head coach midseason in their 103-year history. Could that finally change?

Matt Eberflus’ two-year tenure with the Bears has been a disaster. He has a 3-18 record, including an active 14-game losing streak that shows no signs of ending anytime soon.

It’s clear Eberflus doesn’t have a future in Chicago beyond this season. But could the impossible happen? Could the Bears actually fire him in the middle — technically, the beginning — of the season? One NFL insider thinks so, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today's Bears Wire reports.

NBC Sports’ Peter King appeared on 670 The Score on Tuesday night and said that if the Bears lose to the Washington Commanders on Thursday, he wouldn’t be surprised if the team moves on from Eberflus quickly.

“I would not be surprised if it is a bad loss Thursday,” King said, “and if the Bears make a change, it wouldn’t be surprising.”

If that’s the case, this would be the perfect time for the Bears to make a move. Following Thursday’s game, Chicago has 11 days before they face the Vikings on Oct. 15. It would provide enough time to appoint Eberflus’ replacement and have plans in place.
