Amari Cooper: When Joe Flacco drops back and lets it go, it’s poetry in motion

It's very likely with Dorian Thompson-Robinson still in the concussion protocol that Joe Flacco will start for the Cleveland Browns against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 13.

Flacco, the former Super Bowl MVP, impressed the heck out of his new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt while running the first-team offense on Wednesday and Thursday. In fact, Van Pelt agrees wholeheartedly with Flacco that he can still play, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

“He’s very self aware, and I think he’s correct,” Van Pelt said. “There’s still a lot left in that tank. Just watching him with the accuracy and the velocity, the footwork and everything that he showed yesterday.”

“He has an elite arm, there’s no question,” Van Pelt said. “If you put it on a scale of one to five, I’d say he’s a five. His ball flight, his velocity on the ball at every level of the field is very impressive. But guys got excited. He threw some balls against the scout team last week, and guys in the back were kind of fired up.”

That’s music to the ears of Amari Cooper, who hasn’t flourished with Thompson-Robinson (7 of 19 targets, 66 yards, 0 TDs, long catch of 16), and should get more passes downfield with Flacco at the helm.

“That’s what the game is about, making explosive plays, getting good field position so that we can score points,” Cooper said.

What’s more, he’s got an experienced QB — with 180 starts under his belt — who can go deep into the weeds with the cerebral Cooper on the nuances of route-running and beating defensive backs.

“Yeah, it’s real cool,” Cooper said. “He’s a veteran and I know that he has a wealth of knowledge. He played with not just a lot of great receivers, but a lot of good players and as you know, playing with a lot of good players, the defensive side of ball, it could teach him more about his position and what not to do and all those things. More importantly than anythi

Cooper is already a believer. He broke into a wide grin when asked about Flacco’s arm, one that led the Ravens to 10-5 in the playoffs and the Lombardi Trophy in 2012, where he won MVP.

“It looks good,” Cooper said. “He throws a very pretty ball. I don’t know if it’s intentional or what, but when he drops back and he lets it go, the whole motion, it’s like poetry motion. It looks good.”

ng, he’s one of those guys that when I talk to him, I just want to listen. Because I know he has a lot to teach.”
