If Bill Belichick lands in Atlanta, his biggest challenge will be finding a quarterback.
The former Patriots coach reportedly had a second interview with Falcons brass this week, and while the roster is littered with talented pieces, signal caller is a glaring hole. Atlanta picks No. 8 overall, so it’s unlikely they’d land a blue-chip quarterback there without moving up the board.
The free agent market is lean, but there’s one player who clearly stands a cut above the rest, and that’s four-time Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins — and it sounds like he’s a Belichick fan. In a Zoom interview with CBS Sports’ Isabel Gonzalez this week, Cousins raved about the long-time Patriots coach, Chris Mason of Masslive reports.
“Great respect for him as a coach, like everyone else in pro football,” Cousins said “I mean, if you go to that many Super Bowls, win that many Super Bowls, go to that many conference championship games, have the defensive production that he’s had for years and years, it says it all.
“We played ‘em last year on Thanksgiving night. And once again, I noticed several times what he did coverage-wise was challenging and it was different. You always know when you play him that you’re kind of looking over your shoulder and wondering if what you’re seeing is correct. Because you know he usually is going to break the mold and do something different, and that’s part of what has made him a great coach.”
So would Cousins be open to playing for Belichick?
“I’m not gonna turn down an opportunity to play with a future Hall of Fame coach,” Cousins said. “But we’ll have to see where March leads. It’s just a lot of unknowns right now.”
