Last year, when the Chiefs put receiver Kadarius Toney on ice after a massive alignment glitch against the Bills and a critical drop against the Patriots, it felt like they wanted to kick the can to the offseason before trading him but somehow this offseason Andy Reid decided to give another chance to a high-talent, low-cost ($2.53 million in 2024) player. That chance is not going well as the team's first official depth chart has Toney buried the fifth string according to Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com.
Actually, Toney is likely buried even deeper than that as the first-string and second-string in front of him have two players listed at each level. That means the former first-round pick of the Giants is no better than the seventh wideout in the pecking order at one receiver position.
Early on in training camp, it felt a bit like a renaissance for Kadarius Toney. The team was finding unique ways to use him out of the backfield and so on. However, he got hurt last week, which has been a familiar story for the former first-round draft pick. He's got all the talent in the world, but can't seem to stay healthy and stay on the field. He returned to the field over the past two practice sessions but has seldom worked with the top unit. Just the other day, he found himself catching passes from Chris Oladokun and Ian Book. This one might not be the most surprising, but had he not been hurt, it sure feels like it could've gone a different way.
An ankle injury hasn’t helped his effort to go from the 90-man roster to the final 53. The next question is whether he gets traded or cut before the cuts are made later this month. But it would be a shock if Toney was a member of the Chiefs by Week 1 of the regular season.
