Nothing has changed about the Colts’ quarterback depth chart in the wake of Joe Flacco’s performance the past two weeks, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports.
As long as Anthony Richardson's healthy, he is the starting quarterback in Indianapolis.
Richardson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft, was named the starter three weeks into his first training camp, and he’s held that position, when healthy, since.
“Yes, he is our starting quarterback,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said.
Richardson was raw when the Colts drafted him, and Steichen has always said the best way to develop the 22-year-old is to play him, dealing with the growing pains.
There have been growing pains this season, particularly as a passer. Richardson has completed 50.6% of his passes, averaged 8.5 yards per attempt and tossed six interceptions to go along with three touchdowns, leaving plenty of room for improvement.
Flacco has completed 70% of his passes, averaged 7.5 yards per attempt and tossed five touchdowns without throwing an interception in 123 snaps.
But Steichen pushed back on a question suggesting that the Colts were starting Richardson solely out of a desire for development.
“We’re trying to win football games,” Steichen said. “When Anthony’s out there, he makes a lot of big plays for us.”
