Patriots to trade Jarrett Stidham to Raiders

Jarrett Stidham is reuniting with his old offensive coordinator in the desert, Chris Mason of Masslive reports.

The Patriots are trading the quarterback to Josh McDaniels’ Raiders, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Bill Belichick is sending Stidham and a seventh-round pick to Las Vegas for a sixth-rounder. It’s a minimal return, but also frees up almost $1 million in salary cap space.

When New England drafted Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe in the fourth round of last month’s NFL Draft, the writing was on the wall that Stidham’s time in Foxborough was likely coming to an end.

Stidham is entering the final year of his rookie deal and was never able to make much of an impact with the Patriots. With the door wide open in 2020 following Tom Brady’s exodus, Stidham lost a training camp competition to Cam Newton in decisive fashion, and then Brian Hoyer beat him out for the gig as Mac Jones’ backup last season.
