In an update to our previous story, the Carolina Panthers have issued a statement denying they are "eyeing" Sean Payton as their next head coach according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.com.

"We would not talk to-or consider-a coach that is under contract to another team" reads the statement.  The actual report itself hasn't been parroted by anyone else but Front Office Sports, but it's interesting that the Panthers a) felt obligated to respond to the report and b) did not exactly deny the idea that they could be interested in a new coach in 2023.  Signing Payton would be complicated as the Saints would have to trade the rights of their winningest head coach to an NFC South divisional rival in the Panthers before the two sides could meet officially to negotiate terms.

Current coach Matt Rhule enters the 2022 season in arguably the hottest seat in the NFL. The Panthers will be under a ton of pressure to get results.
