Lovie Smith: Texans already believe Davis Mills will be ‘excellent’ QB

New Texans head coach Lovie Smith, who knows a few things about up-and-down QBs, and has seen it all during his varied coaching career thinks second year quarterback Davis Mills will be an excellent quarterback, Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle reports.

“It’s been documented on what I think of Davis,” Smith said. “I think he’s going to be an excellent quarterback in the NFL for a lot of years.”

Smith also said some other positive things about No. 10.

“Every day we’ve opened up the building, (Mills has) been in here. He’s our quarterback. When you’re the leader, you’ve got to be visible,” said the head coach with an 89-87 career NFL record and 2006 Super Bowl appearance. “It’s about this year. Having a year, he and Pep Hamilton getting on the same page with our offense, and him being in a role from the start, that’s different also. But that’s what you do. You have a chance for him to establish himself as one of our primary leaders each day.”

Smith was the 2005 AP Coach of the Year and is guiding the Texans into a new era in 2022. If he’s ahead of the curve on a second-year QB who went 2-9 last year and collected a lot of yards in garbage time, the Texans already have their long-term replacement for Deshaun Watson and a new franchise face.
