The Cincinnati Bengals will be down a tight end for the next couple of weeks but the situation could have been much worse according to James Rapien of

Drew Sample was carted off the field during Thursday’s practice after hurting his knee, but he avoided a major injury. Head coach Zac Taylor told reporters that Sample is expected to miss weeks rather than months as a result of the injury.  “It’ll probably be a couple of weeks with him. Probably dodged a pretty big bullet there,” Taylor told Rapien. “Just got rolled up. It’s hard to see on the tape, it’s hard for him to remember exactly how it unfolded. We’ll just get him some rest and see how it goes from there.”  Sample was seen on the sideline Friday with a brace on his injured knee and walking with a crutch.

Sample is primarily a blocking tight end and, as a result, had only 11 catches for 81 yards last season despite appearing in every game.  A 2019 second-round pick out of Washington, Sample's best season in Cincinati was 2020 when he produced a 40/349/1 line in 16 games.

Hayden Hurst, Mitchell Wilcox, Scotty Washington, Justin Rigg, Thaddeus Moss, and Nick Eubanks are the other tight ends on the Bengals roster.  Hurst is expected to be the primary pass-catching TE in 2022.
