Is Jimmy Garoppolo in Jets' future?

With Zach Wilson heading to the Jets bench, it's fair to think about their quarterback of the future.  Because of Wilson’s fully guaranteed contract structure, general manager Joe Douglas won’t cut him after 2022, Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media reports. That wouldn’t make sense from a salary cap perspective.

But Douglas could trade Wilson. That would result in the Jets taking on $11.4 million in dead money — compared to a $9.5 million cap hit for Wilson if he remains with the team in 2023. So while that isn’t ideal, it’s not a crippling dead money hit.

Depending on how high the Jets draft in 2023 (which depends on how many games they win), Douglas might not be in a position to pick Wilson’s replacement. So he might have to pursue a new quarterback in free agency (like Jimmy Garoppolo) or via a trade.

Coach Robert Saleh was the 49ers defensive coordinator prior to becoming Jets head coach and has familiarity with Garoppolo.  The Jets are an ascending team and Garoppolo could be the missing piece to take them far into the playoffs.
