The Detroit Lions have added yet another former player to their unique coaching staff. And this time, it’s a very familiar face, Kyle Meinke of Mlive reports.
Dre’ Bly has been hired as the club’s next cornerbacks coach, effectively replacing Aubrey Pleasant, a defensive backs coach who was fired in the middle of last season. Brian Duker is expected to continue working with the safeties.
“I’m excited to announce that I have joined the Detroit Lions as the cornerbacks coach!” Bly tweeted. “Thank you to Mrs. Sheila Ford Hamp and the rest of the Ford family, DC Aaron Glen, GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell for an opportunity to come back home!”
Bly was an 11-year NFL veteran who spent four seasons with Detroit from 2003-06. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons with the club and picked off 19 passes with the Lions overall. He also played for the St. Louis Rams (1999-2002), Denver Broncos (2007-08) and San Francisco 49ers (2009), appeared in 167 games overall, made 116 starts and totaled 498 tackles, 149 pass defenses, 43 interceptions -- five of which he returned for touchdowns -- 20 forced fumbles and 5.0 sacks. He also won Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams.
He’s spent the last four years as the cornerbacks coach at the University of North Carolina.
