The NFL has published some concerning concussion data from the 2022 season, Matt Audilet of The Spun reports.

The number of diagnosed concussions jumped from 126 in 2021 to 149 this past season — an 18 percent increase.

This year also saw an increase in in-game concussion testing. The NFL was forced to alter its protocols after Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was wrongly cleared to return to a game early in the season.

Tua's multiple serious head injuries drew extra attention to the league's concussion issue, but there's no question this has been a problem in football since the game's inception.

During Friday's conference call, the NFL said a large portion of this year's concussions came during punt and kickoff plays. The league said it will continue to workshop ways to make these special teams plays safer in the years to come.
