The Detroit Lions have reworked yet another contract, this time bringing some overdue clarity to the future of Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Kyle Meinke of Mlive reports.
Vaitai joined Michael Brockers as the top potential cap casualties in Detroit because of the size of their contracts and free fall of their production. Vaitai has been dogged by injuries throughout his three seasons in Detroit, and didn’t play at all last year because of a back issue.
But instead of cutting him, the Lions have convinced Vaitai to take a substantial pay cut instead, slashing his 2023 salary from $9.4 million to $3 million, although it will count as only $1.21 million against the cap. That frees up roughly $7 million in cap space for this season.
Vaitai has also agreed to turn his 2024 season -- when he was due another salary of $9.4 million -- into a void year.
