Jets All Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner has — well, had — a message for fans who think he’s part of the problem: Don’t blame me!
On Sunday night, after the Jets were blown out by the Buffalo Bills, Gardner pointed a finger at his teammates in a tweet that he quickly deleted, Kevin Manahan of NJ Advance Media reports.
“Y’all must not know defense if y’all think I’m just allowing a 81 yd TD on that play,” he tweeted. “Yes, I coulda still made a play ... We gotta be better.”
In the 32-9 loss, the Jets yielded an 81-yard touchdown to Khalil Shakir for the NFL’s longest pass play of the season and Shakir’s third career TD catch. On a second-and-five in the third quarter, Shakir caught a pass from Josh Allen at the Jets’ 45-yard line, then sprinted through the secondary for the TD.
Gardner tried to jump the route but failed. Gardner — who then appeared to jog after Shakir — could’ve made a tackle when Shakir cut back toward him, but Gardner, Brandon Echols and Jordan Whitehead missed the tackle when they collided at the 20-yard line. Gardner also was knocked to the turf Dalton Kinkaid’s hustling block.
