A league source confirmed to Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News that the team has re-signed safety Taylor Rapp to a three-year contract. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who was first to report that Rapp re-signed, the contract is worth up to $14.5 million.
The Bills released franchise cornerstone Jordan Poyer earlier Wednesday, and are staring at the possibility of losing safety Micah Hyde, either to retirement or unrestricted free agency, which begins next week with the start of the new league year. Re-signing Rapp gives them a player who has a year of experience in the defensive scheme and can be penciled into one of those starting jobs.
Rapp appeared in 16 games in the regular season last year, starting four times, and finished with 45 tackles, 0.5 sacks, one interception, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery. His interception sealed the Bills’ Week 18 win over Miami, which clinched the AFC East and the No. 2 seed in the conference playoffs. In that game, however, Rapp suffered a calf injury that held him out of both of Buffalo’s postseason games.
Rapp, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Rams who started 48 of 57 regular-season games in Los Angeles over four years before signing a one-year contract with the Bills last offseason. A 6-foot, 208-pounder, he has 10 career interceptions.
