Bucs safety Antoine Winfield Jr. was a play or two from escaping Sunday’s game against the Commanders as one of the few Bucs defensive backs still standing.
But then he suffered an ankle injury that will force him to miss at least two weeks and maybe as much as a month, Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times reports.
“He’s pretty sore,” head coach Todd Bowles said Monday.
Winfield, an All-Pro last season, left Raymond James Stadium in a walking boot following the Bucs’ 37-20 victory.
But the news could have been worse.
Starting cornerback Zyon McCollum left the game with a concussion. His replacement, Bryce Hall, suffered a season-ending dislocated ankle and fractured leg. Cornerback Josh Hayes exited with an ankle injury.
