On his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was asked about former player and current high school head coach Jason Witten and if he thought the future Hall of Famer could be a head coach in the NFL one day, Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Jones answered with unwavering confidence. “Yes, without hesick tation,” Jones said. “Yes. He has something that you can’t draw up. He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now [Dan Campbell].”
Currently the head coach at Liberty Christian High School in Argyle, Witten led the Eagles to an undefeated season and state championship in 2023. He has amassed a 36-11 record in his four seasons with the school and heads into the 2024 TAPPS playoffs with a 9-1 record and one of the favorites to win the state crown once again.
“Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances,” Jones said. “But more important than anything, he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it. Without a question, he could become [an NFL head coach]. He has extraordinary work ethic...He can be a top coach.”
Witten played 16 seasons with the Cowboys after being selected in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He holds multiple franchise records including receptions (1,215), receiving yards (12,977), games played (255) and receptions in a game (18). After retiring from the NFL in 2020, Witten immediately got into high school coaching where he has been for the last four years.
With the Cowboys’ season spiraling downward and head coach Mike McCarthy in the final season of his five-year deal with the team, Dallas could be one of many teams on the hunt for a new coach in the offseason. Profi
