In an update to our previous story, Matt Eberflus WON'T be coaching the Chicago Bears in Week 14 because he has just been fired according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
This is the first time in franchise history that a head coach has been fired in-season but it absolutely had the be done after the Thanksgiving Day debacle. It is somewhat surprising that ownership let Eberflus go through his day-after press conference before dropping the hammer. It's just another indication of the dysfunction and ineptnes of the entire organization.
He ends his tenure as Bears coach 14-32, including a 4-8 record in 2024 and a current six-game losing streak. A former defensive coordinator turned head coach in 2022, the Bears’ defense showed steady improvement under Eberflus’ watch, and currently ranks ninth in points allowed per game. Unfortunately, the team never figured out it’s offensive identity, ranking 20th or worse in yards per game in each of the last three seasons.
The hiring and firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in the same season was another indictment on Eberflus’ inability to get the right people in the building to propel the Bears into the right direction.
Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will now takeover as the Bears’ interim head coach for the remaining five weeks of the season, as the team prepares for yet another head coaching search this offseason.
