When the Washington Commanders selected Johnny Newton in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft, it seemed only a matter of time before one of the team’s longtime defensive tackles moved on, Bryan Manning of Commanders Wire reports

On Tuesday, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported the Commanders granted Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade. Allen, 30, has spent his entire eight-year career in Washington. The No. 17 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Allen signed a four-year, $72 million extension in 2021 and has one year remaining on his contract. However, he has no guaranteed money remaining on his deal.

All 32 teams are represented at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week. Washington general manager Adam Peters is expected to speak with the media on Tuesday.

Allen tore his left pectoral muscle in a Week 6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Initially believed to be out for the season, Allen returned to the lineup in Week 17 after it was revealed he suffered only a partial tear. Allen played in Washington’s final two games and all three playoff games.

A longtime team captain, Allen made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022. He has 42 career sacks.
