The New York Giants have signed two veteran quarterbacks with a combined 286 NFL starts in the past few weeks. But they're not yet ruling out the idea of drafting one with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Eric Edholm of NFL.com reports.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said as much this week from the Annual League Meeting, even after the team added Russell Wilson, the team's presumed starter, as well as Jameis Winston.
"Yeah, I think anything is on the table. We are still going through the process," Daboll told NFL Media Senior National Columnist Judy Battista on Sunday. "There are still a few weeks out (until the draft), but we are doing a lot of work on not just the quarterbacks but all the players.
"So, we will do what we think is best for the football team, but I wouldn't rule anything out."
ut Giants general manager Joe Schoen also added a caveat in a one-on-one interview with the team's official website on Monday: You also can't force picks and hope to be successful. From the sound of things, Schoen believes the Giants have improved the roster to the point where they don't have to take a quarterback in that spot if they don't want to.
"Since I've been here, we've tried to set it up on draft day (so) that we could go play a game (that day). I feel like we're there now. That way you don't get backed into a corner or force yourself to do anything," Schoen said. "Now we're in a situation where you go through the roster and say, 'OK, throughout the draft, where can we still upgrade?'
"We're not done. We still want to upgrade. We have five picks in the top 105. We could go any position, so we're not ruling any position out."
Translation: If the Giants draft Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders -- or any other quarterback -- at No. 3 overall, it's because the team believes he's worth taking that high in the draft.
Daboll said the Giants arrived at the two QB additions after a lot of legwork this offseason, exploring all avenues to improve there for this coming season. The Giants' 2024 campaign was marred by poor QB play, starting three different quarterbacks and playing four different ones in a 3-14 season.
"We have done a lot of work on all these quarterbacks -- free-agent quarterbacks, college quarterbacks," Daboll said. "I'm happy to have Russ and Jameis in the quarterback room. I look forward to working with them. They have quite a bit of experience in the league. I look forward to getting them in the building on April 21 and digging into the playbook and all the things you need to do with a quarterback."
