Mike McDaniel expects 'better version' of Tua Tagovailoa in 2025

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel thinks the arrow is still pointing up for 27-year-old quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Adam Stites of Dolphins Wire reports.

"He's always getting better. He's always improving on things in his game," McDaniel told ESPN's Kevin Clark last week. "That's one thing that I think is supremely important, specifically at the quarterback position. ... He's going to be a better version of what the world last saw of him."

Tagovailoa put up strong numbers in his time on the field in 2024, finishing the year with 19 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 101.4 passer rating. His 72.9 completion percentage was the third highest single-season rate in NFL history behind only a couple Drew Brees seasons.

But as has been the case for the majority of his NFL career, Tagovailoa struggled to stay healthy. He missed four games early in the season after landing on injured reserve with a concussion, and Tagovailoa was sidelined in the final two weeks of the year due to a hip injury.

"He needs to be available," Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said of Tagovailoa in January. "He needs to know how to protect himself. You’re going to get hit at times, it’s always going to happen, but he needs to control what he can control. He understands that. Not being available for taking chances and risk is unacceptable to us, and he knows that.”
