Ben Johnson looking to rewrite Bears' tortured QB history

The Chicago Bears have a long, tortured history when it comes to quarterbacks. And recent history shows that they've been unable to develop young quarterbacks, including first rounders Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields. It's what initially gave Caleb Williams pause, as revealed in Seth Wickersham's new book, and no one can fault him from wanting to avoid being the latest victim.

Following a chaotic rookie season that reinforced those fears, the Bears made a concerted effort this offseason to surround Williams with everything he needs to succeed. That included shoring up the interior offensive line -- after Williams was sacked a league-high 68 times -- and adding more weapons around him. But the most important move was the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach.

Johnson, one of the best offensive minds in the league, comes to Chicago with the goal of not only turning the franchise around but developing Williams into the franchise quarterback they've lacked for decades. And Johnson is eager to change the narrative surrounding quarterbacks in Chicago, Alyssa Barbieri of Bears Wire reports.

“I love the opportunity to come on in and change that narrative," he said. "That's where great stories are written. And so we're looking to write a new chapter here – 2025 Chicago Bears – and looking forward to the future.”

The relationship between Johnson and Williams will be key, and that starts with building trust. Johnson discussed how that's something that will be earned over time, but they're both on the same page with what they want to do to help flip the script on the quarterback narrative in Chicago.

"It starts with developing a rapport and a trust, and that's earned over time," Johnson said. "You don't walk in Day 1 and expect that to be achieved. The more time we spend together, he understands that I have his best interests at hearts, and vice versa. He's going to go out there and play as well as he possibly can, not just for himself or me, but for the whole team and the city, that's really what it comes down to. We're very much aligned in terms of what we want to get done, it just takes more time on task, in terms of getting on the same page with how we're going to do it."
