The FBI has reportedly opened investigations into the death of former Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.

Irsay passed away last May at the age of 65. He was vacationing at the Beverley Hills Hotel in California, with Dr. Harry Haroutunian, an addiction specialist, overseeing his treatment.

Haroutunian signed Irsay’s death certificate, citing cardiac arrest resulting from pneumonia as the cause. There was no autopsy, and Beverly Hills police closed their investigation days later.

The Washington Post reported back in August that Irsay had secretly relapsed following an addiction to painkillers. The publication also noted that Haroutuniun was administering opioid pills and ketamine injections in alarming amounts.

“A federal grand jury subpoena, reviewed by The Post, shows the agency is seeking records and information relating to Irsay’s death, his “substance (illegal and prescription) use,” and his “relationship with Dr. Harry Haroutunian,” a prominent addiction specialist based in California,” the latest report from the publication reads.

The subpoena was issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles earlier in January.

Federal agents also visited Indianapolis this month and questioned people close to Irsay in the latter years of his life. They spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Colts chief legal officer Dan Emerson told the Post the team was aware of the investigation but hasn’t been contacted by the FBI. Moreover, they have not been subpoenaed.

“I do understand that there have been some subpoenas provided, but not to me, the Colts or any of our current employees,” Emerson said.

An FBI spokeswoman for the Los Angeles field office had not responded to a request for comment as of Thursday.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Beverly Hills Police Department said they had not been contacted despite having investigated the death initially.
