Raiders reportedly have shifted from targeting QB in 2023 NFL Draft

While many believe the Las Vegas Raiders could select a quarterback with their first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, new rumblings from the organization suggest the team will go in a different direction on April 27, Jason Burgos of Sportsnaut reports.

The Las Vegas Raiders have a tough choice to make later this month. After finishing 6-11 last season, the roster clearly has several areas they need to address with their picks in the NFL Draft. However, no position in the league is more important than quarterback, and every team in the league without a top-15 talent at the position is always on the lookout for the next great signal caller, including the Raiders.

Las Vegas made the bold move late last season to end their nine-year relationship with Derek Carr and seek out a new long-term fit at QB. In NFL free agency they found their starter for 2023 in Jimmy Garopollo, but most assume the 49ers veteran will not be under center for the team a few years from now.

That is why the Las Vegas Raiders have been doing their homework on the top QBs in this year’s class and have been linked to possibly making a trade to move up in the NFL Draft. Yet, despite the need for a long-term answer at QB, there could be some risky options available when the team is on the clock at seven. That is why new rumors suggest the organization may instead focus on another area of need this month: Cornerback.

On Thursday, ESPN NFL Draft expert Jordan Reid reported on what he is hearing about the Las Vegas Raiders’ plans in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and the players that could be at the top of their wish list.

“While a signal-caller is possible at No. 7, I’ve been told not to rule out a cornerback there by someone with knowledge of the team’s strategy. [Raiders beat writer Paul Gutierrez] and I are hearing the same thing. Las Vegas has checked in on Devon Witherspoon (Illinois), Christian Gonzalez (Oregon) and Joey Porter Jr. (Penn State), the top three corners in this class. The Raiders should have a chance to take the first defensive back off the board. Another source told me, ‘They could go so many directions — quarterback, cornerback. I could even see offensive tackle if they traded back some.'”
