Washington Redskins rookie running back Derrius Guice has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

An MRI will be performed Friday to confirm the diagnosis but it is the best possible news after Guice left Thursday night's preseason opener with a knee injury.  Still, MCL sprains are usually multi-week injuries so we will likely not see Guice again on the field for the rest of training camp or the preseason-valuable time for a rookie to learn the offense and pass protections.  Guice, a star at LSU, fell from being a surefire first round pick in the draft this spring all the way to No.59 over rumors of maturity issues but has drawn nothing but praise from the Redskins coaching staff and was widely expected to be the team's lead back in 2018.  He should be fine by Week 1 of the regular season but the injury may affect his workload early on.  THe Redskins still have Rob Kelley and second-year running back Samaje Perine to pick up the slack in Guice's absence plus premier passcatcher Chris Thompson for third downs but Guice is clearly the most gifted back on the roster.
