The New York Jets have released running back Isaiah Crowell according to the team's official website.

The move was expected after the Jets signed free agent running back Le'Veon Bell to a monster deal on Wednesday and comes just one year after they signed the 26-year-old Crowell to a three-year, $12 million contract.  Crowell would have been owed a $2 million guaranteed  bonus if he had stayed on the roster past March 15.

Crowell's 2018 was not a bust by any means as he  gained 685 yards and scored six touchdowns on 143 carries.  He averaged a healthy 4.8 yards per carry before a foot injury sent him to injured reserve after Week 13 but his production was erratic, as he had two monster games with a 10-102-2 Week 1 against the Lions and 15-219-1 versus Denver in Week 5 but had more than 49 yards from scrimmage in one other game.

The biggest knock against Crowell is that he rarely catches passes, which limits his usefulness in modern NFL offense.  He had never missed a game in his five-year NFL career before the late-season foot issue, however, and is still only 26 years old.  With the top free agent backs already off the board, Crowell should have little trouble finding a new team.
