Levine Toilolo, a Stanford product with ties to Kyle Shanahan, is expected to join the 49ers tight end competition, Cam Inman of Bayareanewsgroup reports.

Toilolo will sign with the 49ers pending a physical, NFL Network reported Wednesday morning. He played with the Atlanta Falcons when Shanahan was their offensive coordinator from 2016-17, and he started in their 2016 season’s Super Bowl loss.

Although the 49ers obviously have one of the league’s top tight ends in George Kittle, their depth at that spot needed to be addressed this offseason, and Toilolo’s blocking prowess makes him a late addition.

Toilolo, 27, played last season with the Detroit Lions after spending his first five years with the Falcons. He is the fourth 49er who played under Shanahan with the Falcons (running back Tevin Coleman and guards Mike Person and Ben Garland).
