Jared Goff has two years left on his contract. But with the ink still wet on Jalen Hurts’ new record-breaking deal, the Detroit Lions quarterback says he’s open to re-upping too whenever -- if ever? -- Detroit is ready to talk business, Kyle Meinke of Mlive reports.

“Of course you’d be open (to an extension),” Goff said on Tuesday during a break in the first round of OTAs in Allen Park. “It hasn’t been brought to my attention, but yeah, of course open to anything. Not up to me. I’m a player, I don’t have to make those decisions. And if I did, I would have made that decision a long time ago. Give me and all my friends all the money in the world.

“But I just get to play, and if that (extension) comes about, that’d be great. But we’ll see.”

Goff was acquired in the blockbuster trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. Two years later, the former No. 1 overall pick has recaptured his Pro Bowl form while outplaying Stafford. He ranked among the 10 best quarterbacks by almost all major measures last season, while going 324 straight passes without an interception to end the season, a top-five streak in NFL history.

It was some of the best ball of his career, and helped propel the Lions’ offense back into the top five for the first time in more than a decade.

The Lions have committed to Goff as their QB1 for 2023, although uncertainty remains about their intentions in the draft. They are clearly happy with their quarterback’s performance, but holding Picks 6 and 18, they could opt to land a long-term successor, which if it panned out, would allow the club to move on from Goff rather than sign him to an extension that likely will cost north of $40 million annually.
