Falcons WR/RB/KR Cordarrelle Patterson looking for big payday

The Atlanta Falcons want to keep jack-of-all-trades veteran Cordarrelle Patterson beyond the 2021 season but may have a lot of competition in the open market according to Josh Kendall of The Athletic.

Kendall thinks Patterson's free agency "will be interesting" and notes that "if someone steps up with a deal in the $7 million range, it will be hard for Atlanta to match that."  Patterson getting $7 million a year would push him just outside of the top-10 running back salaries last year. It's probably more likely that Patterson, who turns 31 in March, will get something closer to what Houston Rexans back David Johnson pulled down last offseason ($5 million/$4.2 million guaranteed), which would be the midpoint between this and what Patterson made last year.

Patterson entered the league as a first-round pick out of Tennessee by the Minnesota Vikings way back in 2013 as a highly-touted wide receiver but has made most of his noise in the NFL as a kick returner for five different teams.  It seemingly took landing with offensive mind Arthur Smith to unlock his potential as a hybrid RB/WR this season and Patterson was arguably the Falcons offensive player of the year, compiling almost 1,200 in total offense and 11 touchdowns in 16 games.  Whether he can duplicate that feat anywhere else-or even with the Falcons in 2022-is questionable given his age and late bloomer-status.
