The Patriots lost a legend on Wednesday morning, Chris Mason of Masslive reports.

Gino Cappelletti, one of the original Boston Patriots and a beloved broadcaster, died surrounded by his family at 89 years old. Cappelletti was a terrific kicker and wide receiver, and later became one of voices of the franchise alongside Gil Santos on the team’s radio broadcast.

Team owner Robert Kraft released a lengthy statement lamenting the legend’s passing.

“My heart aches after learning of Gino Cappelletti’s passing this morning,” Kraft said. “For the first 51 years of this franchise’s history, Gino contributed as an all-star player, assistant coach and broadcaster. You couldn’t be a Patriots fan during that era and not be a fan of Gino’s. The Patriots have had many iconic, fan-favorite players over the years. Gino was the first. I remember watching him play in 1960 and throughout his career."
