Amidst the chaos of the DeShaun Watson decision and its appeal, head coach Kevin Stefanksi has some decisions to make about divvying up reps in training camp and the preseason so that the team is ready for "all scenarios" with his quarterbacks according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Watson has been suspended for the first six games of the regular season and that suspension could grow thanks to the NFL's appeal of the decision.  There’s also the possibility of a lawsuit from Watson and his attorneys challenging the appeal ruling to further cloud the issue of when Watson might be available to play.  So what does Stefanski do during training camp?:

“We’ll let that play out, but we’ve got to get Deshaun ready to play,’’ Stefanski told Cabot.  “He hasn’t played football in a year. We’ve got to get Jacoby (Brissett) ready to play. He’s potentially going to be playing early for us and starting and we’re going to be counting on him.

There are reports that the Browns plan to play Watson in preseason games despite the suspension and despite the risks of injury in a meaningless game.  Stefanski didn’t confirm that, but said the preseason offered valuable reps in front of a defense and it will likely be quite some time before Watson can get any of those in the regular season.

And if the suspension is significantly increased or becomes indefinite?  Cleveland has repeatedly proclaimed their faith in Brissett as a starter but it is hard to believe an otherwise solid roster and a head coach whose seat may be getting warm would put their fates in a backup's hands for the entire 2022 season.
