The Washington Commanders have released veteran running back J.D. McKissic according to Ben Standig of The Athletic.

The Commanders save $1.29 million against the salary cap with the move.  The 29-year-old McKissic missed half the 2022 season with a scary neck injury he suffered in early November.  Prior to that, however, he had been a valuable weapon in the Commanders offense with 150 reception in 35 games since the start of the 2020 season.  Working primarily as a pass-catching specialist, McKissic was a frequent dump-off option for the team's parade of mediocre quarterbacks.

McKissic, who was second among all running backs in targets in 2020, should land elsewhere as a rotational backfield option if he's fully recovered from his neck injury.  Antonio Gibson would be a natural fit to replace McKissic's role in D.C. considering he was primarily a wide receiver in college but, given that this is the dysfunctional Commanders, they will probably sign someone off the street instead of using him.
