Tennessee Titans free safety Kevin Byard has refused to take a requested pay cut for 2023 according to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network.
His refusal puts his status on the Titans roster in question. Originally a third-round pick out of Middle Tennessee State in 2016, the 29-year-old Byard has played his entire NFL career in Tennessee and he remained one of the league's top safeties last year with four interceptions and 100-plus tackles for the second time in three seasons. Unfortunately, he has a cap hit of $19 million for 2023 after agreeing to restructure his contract last offseason and is on a team in dire need of a retooling at numerous positions.
The Titans will need to make a decision on whether to keep Byard, cut or trade him in a salary dump. Tennessee can clear $14 million with $5.5 million in dead money if they designate Byard a post-June cut.
