Mike Florio of ProFootballtalk is reporting the Patriots have shopped quarterback Mac Jones to at least four teams this offseason, Chris Mason of Masslive rerports.  Thos mentioned are the Raiders, Texans, Buccaneers and Commanders, while he noted there could be more.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Belichick has shopped Jones to multiple teams during the 2023 offseason,” Florio wrote. “Obviously, a trade hasn’t occurred yet. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen. A team hoping to draft a quarterback could pivot to Jones, if that team doesn’t get the guy it wants.”

On Pro Football Talk, Florio also reported there was simmering friction between Bill Belichick and Jones because the quarterback called his old coaches at Alabama for advice on Matt Patricia’s offense last season.

“It started with Jones being on the wrong side of the failed experiment to replace offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels with, well, not an offensive coordinator,” Florio wrote. “As Chris Simms explained on Monday’s PFT Live, Jones actually started calling members of the Alabama coaching staff in order to get some information as to how to properly run the offense under long-time defensive coach Matt Patricia.”

At the NFL Owners’ Meetings last week, Belichick was noncommittal about his starting quarterback for the 2023 season. Asked whether Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe would compete for the starting gig this summer, or if the job simply belonged to the incumbent quarterback, Belichick said auditions would be ongoing.

“Well, everybody will get a chance to play. We’ll play the best player,” Belichick said.
