New details have emerged about the unfortunate night Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died by apparent suicide on November 6. The 24-year-old took his life after police chased his car near the team’s training facility in suburban Dallas. Police footage reviewed by The Daily Mail shows a long, frantic search using drones, K-9 units and pepper balls.

The footage also shows officers handcuffing Kneeland’s pregnant girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, after she drove into the search area late that night. Mancera told police she was worried about Kneeland and said he had been struggling with mental health issues.

Around 11:16 p.m., an officer pulled over Mancera after noticing the white Buick registered to Kneeland. The officer told her to step out of the car and put her in handcuffs, saying her vehicle matched the one they were looking for. She sat in the front seat of the patrol car while officers searched her car for Kneeland. They let her go a short time later but continued to keep an eye on her while she stayed at the scene.

Officers questioned her again as they tracked her vehicle. Footage shows her telling them that Kneeland carried a gun and battled mental illness. One Frisco officer said, “The girlfriend has his location. But she’s not giving it to us… She’s like, ‘He’s going to kill himself. I can’t tell you where he’s at.’” Authorities later said she helped them search.

Police had already begun chasing Kneeland’s car around 10:35 p.m. Troopers did not know he was the driver and believed the vehicle was stolen. Kneeland drove at high speeds and eventually crashed into a pickup. He ran on foot into a nearby area filled with offices and apartments. Troopers found an empty holster under his seat.

A K-9 led officers toward a culvert. Police warned that they would send the dog into the tunnel. They fired pepper balls and flew a drone inside but did not find him. At 1:32 a.m., officers found his body inside a port-a-potty.

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said after his death that Mancera is pregnant. She later wrote on Instagram, “I still have a glimpse of hope Marshawn will walk through our front door singing and dancing to the music he was listening to in the car.”

The Cowboys created a memorial fund for Mancera and Kneeland’s unborn child as the community continues to process the tragedy.
