Darius Slay’s run with the Pittsburgh Steelers is over, with the team having cut the six-time Pro Bowler in a surprising move on Tuesday.

Slay was a healthy scratch for the Steelers in their Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills and will not be suiting up for them moving forward. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the parties have agreed to sever ties.

Schefter cited the player’s agents, who told him Slay still wants to play this season and will consider signing with other teams.

“Steelers and CB Darius Slay have mutually agreed to part ways, Slay’s agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told ESPN,” Schefter wrote. “Slay is interested in continuing to play, and will consider signing with other teams. But his time in Pittsburgh has come to an end.”

Slay’s departure marks an additional secondary exit for the Steelers, who released safety Juan Thornhill in November.

Head coach Mike Tomlin noted that the decision to leave Slay out of Sunday’s game was based on the team giving Asante Samuel Jr. a look, not on the former’s health.

Samuel has since been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.

Tomlin has also responded to fans’ calls for him to be fired following the lackluster defeat to the Bills.

Slay, who signed a $10 million deal with Pittsburgh in the offseason, struggled as a starter, although he did well as a rotational piece. The team has opted to part ways with him despite making a significant investment, with Samuel having gotten the nod.

The 26-year-old was the 47th-overall pick for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021. He joined the Steelers’ practice squad at the end of November.
