NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has made an announcement regarding the NFL’s holiday schedule that should have football fans excited.

The NFL has had a stranglehold on late-year holidays for decades. Thanksgiving has always thrown up must-watch games, with a third fixture added several years ago. And now, they’re going after Christmas.

A mouthwatering Xmas Day slate is inbound for this year. The Dallas Cowboys will square off against the Washington Commanders in what could be a pivotal NFC East matchup, while the Detroit Lions will face the Minnesota Vikings. Both of these games will be available to watch on Netflix.

The final matchup, between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, will air on Prime Video.

In more recent times, the NFL has added a Black Friday game. The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles faced off with the Chicago Bears in this year’s iteration, though under the threat of horrible weather

Goodell, who recently revealed that the Super Bowl could be heading to a new city, has since announced that a second Black Friday game could be in the works.

“We’re going to look at everything, I would expect there will be changes going forward,” he told the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint.

While Black Friday has traditionally been dominated by college football, the NFL is looking to maintain a strong presence on the day.

The possibility of a second game will definitely excite fans, but it won’t be without its challenges.

The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 prevents the NFL from broadcasting games on Friday nights and Saturdays from the second Friday in September until the second Saturday in December within 75 miles of high school or college football games.

This is, of course, to keep the league from stealing the spotlight from the NCAA. It’s become clear, however, that Goodell and the owners are looking for ways around it.
