ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes that the end of Travis Kelce’s illustrious career is just around the corner.

Fans have wondered about Travis Kelce’s playing future for a couple of years now. Kelce and Taylor Swift got engaged over the summer, so it’s understandable if the three-time Super Bowl champion decided to call it quits and prioritize his personal life.

It’s hard to imagine life for Kansas City without Kelce. But Stephen A. Smith believes the writing’s on the wall for the future Hall of Famer.

“You’re gonna get a new tight end, because I think Travis Kelce is going to retire,” Smith said during First Take on Monday morning.

“I mean, this is probably the end for him,” Smith added. “I think we all knew he just came back because of the way they went out in the Super Bowl against the (Philadelphia) Eagles.”

Travis Kelce has 60 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns, per Pro Football Reference. Barring a strong finish to the season, Kelce will finish below 1,000 receiving yards for the third straight year. He eclipsed that mark in seven consecutive years from 2016 to 2022.

Kelce was visibly dejected after a crucial drop in Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans. The All-Pro tight end dropped a pass from Patrick Mahomes, allowing the ball to fall into the hands of Azeez Al-Shaair. The interception, Mahomes’ third of the game, basically sealed the deal for Houston.

Now at 6-7, the Chiefs face extremely slim odds of making the playoffs. They’ve already missed out on what would have been a 10th straight AFC West division crown. More importantly, their streak of 10 straight playoff appearances is also on the ropes.
