Sean McDermott gave his input, and it backfired on him. The Buffalo Bills’ 2025 season ended Saturday at the hands of the Denver Broncos, and also marked the end of an era.

On Monday, the Bills made the decision to fire coach McDermott after nine seasons. General manager Brandon Beane seemingly received a promotion, as he is now president of football operations/general manager. He will also lead the coaching search.

It turns out the powers that be could not accept the truth when it was presented to them.

The Bills fired McDermott five weeks after the then-head coach vented to GM Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula about roster deficiencies.

WGRZ reported that McDermott “pointed out what the roster lacked to win a Super Bowl. I’m told neither Beane nor Pegula was pleased with McDermott’s assessment.”

NFL Network would later confirm that there was issues among the Bills’ decision-makers. “McDermott himself had some questions about how much talent the Bills had,” reporter Ian Rapoport said. “I’m not sure that sat well in the building.”

Sean McDermott went 98-50 in his nine years with Buffalo. He also had an 8-8 record in his eight playoff appearances. Those eight postseason victories are the most without a Super Bowl appearance all time. That may ultimately have played into Buffalo’s decision to fire him.

McDermott penned a classy letter to the Buffalo Bills and their fans after he was unexpectedly handed his pink slip on Monday. The coach built his reputation as a defensive coach but oversaw explosive offenses in Buffalo. That experience would translate naturally to other teams.

The head coach certainly showed the ability to build a team. For teams with a roster nearing contention, McDermott stands out as an ideal coach. His status around the league will put him in a favorable spot with a good choice of interested teams.
