Adam Schefter Slammed with Brutal ‘Community Note’ After Embarrassing Christian McCaffrey Blunder—Fans Are Losing It
This article was originally published on Total Pro Sports.

Adam Schefter got a good amount of hate on Thursday after the NFL announced its award finalists.
The ESPN reporter posted on X that San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey was “believed to be the first player in NFL history” to be a finalist for MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year in the same season.
Fans quickly pointed out the mistake. They noted that Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow reached the same milestone last season. Former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson also did it back in 2012.
X responded within hours. The platform added a community note under Schefter’s post. The note read, “Christian McCaffrey is not the first player to be a finalist for NFL MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year in the same season; Adrian Peterson was a finalist for all three in 2012, and Joe Burrow was a finalist for all three in 2025.”
The NFL will present the awards on February 5 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. NBC and NFL Network will air the NFL Honors show at 9 p.m. ET. Despite the online correction, McCaffrey remains a finalist in all three categories.
Fans Call Out Schefter’s Mistake

NFL fans wasted no time. Many questioned how such a slip reached Schefter’s feed. Chet Davis of CBS6 summed up the frustration in a sharp post.

“ESPN is able to find the last time a QB threw for +325 yards, 3 TDs, no turnovers while rushing for +60 yards on less than 5 attempts while never holding a lead until the final drive of game with -5 wind chill. But CMC is ‘believed to be’ the first. C’mon now,” Davis wrote.

Other fans pointed to history. One reply read, “Adrian Peterson won MVP, OPOY, and finished 2nd in CPOY in 2012 nice tweet tho.”

Another fan stressed Schefter’s reach. “I feel like Adam Schefter has to be more careful with some of information he puts out,” the fan wrote. “He has too big of a platform to put misinformation out like this.”

Several posts highlighted Burrow’s recent run. “This is hilarious PR considering Joe Burrow did this exact feat LAST YEAR,” one fan added.

However, it’s almost a back-to-back call-out against Schefter. Last month, Adam Schefter also faced heavy criticism for comments he made about Sherrone Moore, with many calling his take “delusional.”
As for the awards, oddsmakers expect Matthew Stafford to win MVP. They favor Jaxson Smith-Njigba for Offensive Rookie of the Year. They also favor Myles Garrett for Defensive Player of the Year. McCaffrey will still take the stage in San Francisco. The facts will take center stage, too.
