Speculation is heating up about a potential blockbuster trade involving Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow and the Minnesota Vikings.

Joe Burrow himself started trade speculation in December. Amid another frustrating season in Cincinnati, a reporter asked the 29-year-old about the possibility of playing for another team in the future.

Burrow wouldn’t fully commit to Cincinnati, telling reporters, “You think about a lot of things.” This came after Burrow had a depressing press conference, in which he told the media he was going through some struggles, both on and off the field.

Speaking on the latest edition of his show, Minnesota Vikings beat reporter Alec Lewis of The Athletic suggested that the NFC North will go hard after Burrow if the Bengals make him available:

“If a player like Joe Burrow is available via trade, I expect the Vikings to do everything they possibly can to make that happen. It’s more a question of what is available…and how far from a cost perspective is it gonna take.”

The Vikings finished a disappointing 9-8 in 2025, and it was solely due to their quarterback play. JJ McCarthy battled injuries and inconsistency. He, Max Brosmer and Carson Wentz combined for 17 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

So yes, they could use a quarterback upgrade. But getting a player of Burrow’s caliber is much easier said than done.

It feels unlikely that Burrow will request a trade from the Bengals now, seeing that all head coaching vacancies have been filled. However, nobody should be surprised if Burrow demands a trade if things continue to go sideways.

Burrow led the Bengals to consecutive AFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl 56 berth in his first two healthy seasons. The Bengals have let their star quarterback down by failing to build a quality offensive line and defense around him.

The Bengals are notoriously quiet in free agency. Owner Mike Brown better be willing to pay whatever it takes to land some stars, and de facto GM Duke Tobin can’t afford to have another bad draft class. If Cincy doesn’t re-emerge as a contender in 2026, Burrow should definitely seek a trade.
