Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith made his thoughts clear about Shedeur Sanders. Depending on who you ask, people will tell you the quarterback has been poorly treated or given privileges he hasn’t earned just yet.

The latest controversy involving Sanders was his selection to the 2025 Pro Bowl Games as Drake Maye’s replacement. While many criticized the decision, Sanders was thankful for the opportunity. Things didn’t go his way, though, as he threw two interceptions during the competitive flag football game.

After a tumultuous rookie season, Sanders is ready to compete for the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback role. With new head coach Todd Monken saying the job is to be determined, Sanders vowed to keep working to earn his spot.

During a Thursday appearance on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams,” Emmitt Smith didn’t hold back when discussing the treatment other quarterbacks received compared to Sanders.

“I guess coaches wanna make sure that guys know that there is no security in their position,” Smith said.

“And they want them to be as competitive (as possible) and compete for the job. No one wants to hand anything to them. This is the way that they treated Shedeur. But they handed it to Drake Maye, they handed it to the kid out in San Diego (Justin Herbert), they also handed it to the kid in Jacksonville (Trevor Lawrence); they also handed it to Sam Darnold. They also handed it to other players.

“And what does Cleveland have? Absolutely nothing. So, what’s the debate? Are you going to give it to Dillon (Gabriel) again?”

Smith added that they could name somebody else a starter or captain. However, if players don’t follow or respect that person, things won’t go as expected. He said that Sanders was the only quarterback to play like a starter in 2025. The Cowboys legend also noted that the Browns looked better with the rookie on the field.
