Adam Gase may return to the NFL in a surprising role. The former head coach is being considered for a job with the Los Angeles Chargers. Reports say he could join the team as an offensive assistant. The news surprised many fans.

CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz said the Chargers are looking at Gase as a possible addition to Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff. No deal has been finalized yet, and discussions are still ongoing. If it happens, this would be Gase’s first NFL job in five years.

Gase has had mixed results as a coach. He worked as an offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears before becoming the Miami Dolphins’ head coach. Miami fired him after three seasons with a 23-25 record and one playoff appearance. He later coached the New York Jets, but that time was difficult. The Jets finished 9-23 in two seasons and fired him in 2020. Gase has not coached in the NFL since then.

Joining the Chargers could give Gase a fresh start. Harbaugh is highly respected around the league, and Mike McDaniel is also part of the staff. Working in a smaller role could help Gase rebuild his reputation and show he can succeed again.

Fans React To Gase’s Possible Hire

Chargers fans do not sound excited about the idea. Many quickly shared negative reactions after the report surfaced.

“Jim trying to one up John Harbaugh with the worst assistant coaching hire of the offseason you love to see this type of brotherly rivalry,” one fan said.

Another fan saw a possible upside. “Adam Gase wants to learn from Mike McDaniel. This could restart his career and help rebuild his reputation,” the fan said.

Other supporters voiced stronger concern. “Keep this guy far away from my team,” a Chargers fan said.

One more fan focused on his past struggles with the Jets. “I hope Gase is just an assistant, far far away from game planning, coordination or play design,” the fan commented. “His play designs and calls with the Jets were horrific.”

Many people seem unsure about the idea. However, hiring Gase as an assistant would not be a big risk for the Chargers. Harbaugh would still control the offense and the team’s direction. Gase would mainly help by offering ideas and support.

Nothing is official yet. The Chargers are still looking at coaching staff options. Gase is waiting for another opportunity. The next few days may decide if his return to the NFL actually happens.
