An old clip of former New York Giants wide receiver Phil McConkey finding a handgun on the field during the Super Bowl 21 victory celebration has resurfaced.

We’ve seen our fair share of bizarre Super Bowl moments over its 60-year history. Just this year, we saw New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams chase down and tackle a streaker in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 60.

This is a popular time of the year for fans to reflect on the most memorable Super Bowl moments. But what happened at the end of Super Bowl 21 between the Giants and the Denver Broncos was another level of “bizarre.”

After a 39-20 blowout win over the Broncos, Phil McConkey went to celebrate on the field. In the clip below, McConkey can be seen picking up a loose handgun on the Rose Bowl field. Clearly confused, he handed it over to a security officer before anyone could try something stupid:

Following the game, authorities clarified that the handgun belonged to a police officer. The cop apparently lost it while trying to stop a fan who had jumped onto the field. Thankfully, McConkey retrieved it to avoid a potentially dangerous scenario.

The Giants defense did the heavy lifting in their blowout win over John Elway’s Broncos in Super Bowl 21. But McConkey, then in his second stint with Big Blue, was the unsung hero of that game.

McConkey had a 44-yard reception and a six-yard touchdown pass in the game. On special teams, he contributed a 25-yard punt return as well. With Phil Simms also playing lights-out behind center, the Broncos simply never stood a chance against Bill Parcells’s squad.

Phil McConkey finished with 67 receptions for 1,113 yards, two touchdowns, 1,832 punt return yards and 1,324 kick return yards in his career. Not bad for an undrafted player who didn’t make it to the pros until he was 27.
