After seven years with the team, the Arizona Cardinals will release Kyler Murray at the start of the league’s new year. The veteran quarterback couldn”t lead the team to contend, and the Cardinals’ offseason overhaul will include parting ways with him.

Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, played five games in 2025, going 110 of 161 for 962 yards and six touchdowns. The Cardinals brought in Mike LaFleur as their new head coach. LaFleur reportedly wants Jimmy Garoppolo as his starting quarterback, and Murray already has a strong market.

Teams like the Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers and even MLB’s Athletics could offer him a new challenge. However, the apparent frontrunner to sign him faces a roadblock to add Murray.

The Minnesota Vikings Might Have To Maneuver To Land Kyler Murray

NFL insider Ian Rapoport mentioned the Minnesota Vikings as a team to watch in Murray’s potential sweepstakes. However, the NFC North franchise isn’t in the best financial position ahead of free agency. The Vikings are the second-worst team in salary cap ($46.6 million over the cap), which could complicate their Murray pursuit.

To add Murray, the Vikings would need to make a series of moves (cuts and contract restructures) to make room for the former No. 1 pick. Murray could be the replacement for J.J. McCarthy after he struggled in 2025.

Adding a veteran presence is in the cards for Minnesota. Kirk Cousins and even Aaron Rodgers have been floated as options for the Vikings. Still, they will have to make moves to add any of these players.
