Former NFL coach turned analyst Tony Dungy spent 17 years with NBC Sports. The veteran’s future took a major turn in February when reports about his potential exit from the network surfaced.

On Thursday, Dungy confirmed that he was out of the network. He sent a message to his former co-workers and the people who helped him through his journey.

“I have been informed by NBC that I won’t be back with FNIA this fall and it has given me time to reflect and also to look ahead. It’s disappointing news but I want to thank my NBC family for making the last 17 years so special. I’ll have lasting memories of my time there, especially with Rodney Harrison who has become a tremendous friend,” Dungy tweeted.

“God has always directed me in these moments and while I’m not sure what the next step will be for me—whether it will be in football, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach —I know God has plans for my life and I can’t wait see them unfold.”

Many reacted to the news on social media, with plenty celebrating that NBC finally moved on from Dungy.

“Loved Tony but actions have consequences,” one fan said, referring to Dungy not voting for Bill Belichick for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“And you’ll be remembered for your final moments with Rodney Harrison roasting you for being a petty a-hole for not putting belichick in the HOF, enjoy retirement coach,” another fan said.

“Had you been less petty about Belichick, the number of football fans who hate you would be about 20% of what it is today. And you might still be employed,” a third fan said.

“FNIA needs to clean house, not just Dungy. The entire show is a catastrophe,” a fourth fan added.

“We all know you voted against Bill Belichick HoF because you’re still salty over how dominant Patriots were against them baby soft Colts,” a fifth fan said.

Others celebrated Tony Dungy for discussing his faith publicly and thanked him for being a class act. Multiple jobs in the NFL media would be available this offseason. More figures will line up to take on those roles.
